I am often alone in the field recording with my ZOOM recorders and RØDE mics. Mostly without any mic stands, jumping from sound to sound, recording on the fly.
I always had to decide if want to record the following sounds in stereo, or mono with a shotgun mic. Holding the Stereo-Mics in one hand and the Blimp with the Shotgun-Mic in the other always feels uncomfortable and destroys a lot of flexibility. You can’t just
So made up this idea:
The 1-handed-3-channel-recoridng-setup. Consisting of the follwong parts:
- Røde Blimp
- Zoom H5 Field Recorder (or any other portable recorder)
- Rycote H6 Suspension
- Short XLR
That’s it.
Now i can easily move around and record all 3 channels separately.
Of course, it’s also possible to do little changes to the setup. Think about a stereo-recorder X/Y with a M/S or an ORTF on top…
The only disadvantage is, that i am not able to check the levels. So i have to got a bit lower with these. You can do a workaround with mounting the Fieldrecorder to a Stereo-Bar so you can check the levels. Or you just flip the whole thing upside down.
If don’t want to use the preamps of the fieldrecorder, feel free to put any mobile preamp in between.
